Also, can i just show you this picture?
Oh. My. Goodness.
That is a ton of people.
Talk about intimidating!!! I just hope i can see my friends out on the course as i run by - and i hope to still be running when i see them, ha.
Now, i know all you readers are AMAZING runners and probably don't have to take walk breaks like i do. But i would like your honest opinion: what do you think of runners that have to stop and walk out on the course?
As much as i'd like to be able to run the full 13 miles nonstop, i don't think that is a reality. And honestly, i feel embarrassed about it - even though I know that's (kinda) silly. I just hope to do the best i can on Sunday and be proud...

I think if you need to take a walk break then take one. I don't think any less of those that do. We are out there running a half or full marathon...that is AMAZING!!!! No matter what! You will do great and I'm sure you will get to see your friends cheering you on. I was nervous about that last year but got to see my family and bf about 4 times throughout the course. Have fun!
Whoa! That is A TON of people!
Hey, no shame in walk breaks. I have heard they really help! Do what works best for you :)
I hope you can plan out a point for your friends to watch for you so you know where to look! We watched for friends at the Chicago Marathon and didn't see any of them :(
Your goal is to finish and, most of all, HAVE FUN! Just go with what you're feeling. If you need to take walk breaks, there's no shame in that... you'll see that many people walk through each water stop, while others just stop and walk occasionally. You may find you need some walk breaks, but you may not... Good Luck, and have a great time!
Best wishes for your half! Listen to your body and do what you need to do to cross that finish line!
I'm a run-walker! =) I use intervals (5:1) and you'll find at the race that many, MANY people use intervals as well. There ain't no shame in walking (= Just listen to your body, do what feels right, and you'll be fine!
FYI, watch out for people who stop abruptly in front of you with no warning! They really should be moving to the right before they do that, but some ppl never do!
Good luck on Sunday, and have a ton of fun! Looking forward to reading your race report =D
Walk breaks ... take them as you need to. I've done bodywork on some clients that have completed 5-10 marathons, and they said that walking through the water stations are how they got through their first few marathons.
No shame in that at all girl .. more and more people are using the interval method of running/walking .. and achieving pb's.
You'll be great gurl .. and I hope to see you on the course on Sunday. I think I've answered my 'Should I .. Shouldn't I' question .. thanks for the adrenaline rush.
Like everyone said .. 'Enjoy the experience' ...
There is no shame in it at all! You need to listen to what your body is telling you! Taking a few walk breaks and still finishing your first half is far better than getting injured and not finishing! Push yourself, but know your limits. I noticed alot of people use water stops as their walk breaks. Grab some water and walk a bit, hydrate, and then go from there. No matter what, you are doing someone most people will never ever attempt!
Oh, and I fixed it to in memory of =)
Good luck tomorrow, Melissa! =) Have a blast!
ROCK IT GIRL!
Thanks, ladies!!!
Here goes nothing...! :)
good luck - I'm sure you'll make it!!
Good luck!!!! You'll be fine...walk breaks and all!
Ok I'm officially a stalker but I checked the Arizona results and YOU FINISHED!!!! AHHH SO PROUD! YOU GO GIRL!
I'm just not coordinated enough to run and drink water. I've tried. I end up coughing. And hydrating is too important when you are running long distances. A lot of times I grab the cup, stop and chug it, then start running again. Or I walk and drink it. I've volunteered at a mile 8 water station and I'd say more people walked through that water station than didn't.
Outside of the water stations, I don't let myself walk. Mainly b/c I feel like "I paid for this thing, so I'm jogging the whole thing, dammit." But completion is completion. When people are taking a non-water station walk break around me what I'm actually thinking is that I'm jealous they get to walk ;-) The people who walk within the first 3 miles I can't help but wonder how the race turns out for them...but it's stupid to judge because everyone has their own circumstances. They could be coming back from an injury, have just lost a ton of weight, never ran a race before in their life, etc. Yay road racers!
