So, i have a dilemia: I really, really want to run the R & R San Diego1/2 Marathon this June. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE San Diego and think the course would be sooo pretty.
However, i also planned on running the R & R Vegas 1/2 in December. I mean, come on. It's Vegas!
I think i can only do one of these because the cost will add up quickly (race fee, hotel stay, plane ride).
I don't know which one to do!! What would you choose??

welllll you clearly already know my opinion but if it helps at all...some of my family went to Vegas this year for the RnR (only one ran it, the other went along for the ride, cuz like you said, its vegas!). Unfortunately they said it was jam packed, from the expo, to hotels, to shuttles, to start village, the works. And apparently its a really fun run through the strip, but once you get past all the glitz, its a nice desert run. lastly, it was only in the 30's considering the month it takes place in. Of course I'm not trying to sway you one way or another...but San Diego. all the way. =)
This is a tough one! I'm not familiar with the new SD route or the half marathon route since it's the inaugural, but you really can't go wrong with SD. The eats are great, the sites are great, and the weather is nice! Although you should know that it can get pretty warm around that time. While I got lucky last year with temps in the 50s/60s, my friend was not so lucky the year before when it hit 85! So, it's a toss up with the weather. Friends that did Vegas last year really enjoyed it. And it is pretty cool to have pics of you running on Las Vegas Blvd with the huge casinos towering in the background, but it does get a bit boring during some parts of it. I don't think that's unique to just Vegas tho. Most races have less than exciting parts to their route. The last few miles of the SD marathon were through this area that reminded me of where serial killers go to murder and dump the bodies of their victims. If we weren't running with thousands of other runners, I would have been really scared! I say go with San Diego, for now, and if you can save for Vegas, go for that one, too! Or, skip Vegas and splurge on the Garmin instead ;) You won't regret it! Good luck with your decision! It's a toughie.
I considered doing the San Diego Half also but decided with the Vegas trip. It was easier for me to decide because my friend is also running the Vegas one and we can do it together. I say VEGAS BABY VEGAS!!!
hmmmm well if you do SD, I might be running it too! :)
San Diego runs are typically known for hilly courses (especially compared to what we're used to in the desert).
Keep an eye out for the elevation report on the website then make your decision (http://san-diego.competitor.com/event-info/course/). The Vegas RnR is flat .. very very flat. You don't even get those last little hills you did at the PF Changs.
Anyway, good luck with your decision ... and keep the training going. I'm up doing the 1/2 in Sedona the weekend of your bday party .. so I won't be able to make it. But have tons of fun .. as I know you will.
Keep up with the training ... Pat Tillman in April?
I have a perfect solution...run San Diego with Team in Training so they will pay for your registration, flight, and hotel, then you will have the money for Vegas! ha I'm biased I know =)
Okay, really what this comes down to is how long of a break you feel you need from training. If you feel like you'll be ready to start training again in a month or two, kudos to you! I didn't feel like that at all after my first half. I knew I wanted to do another, but finally decided on one that was almost 8 months after my first.
Mentally, my second half was actually in some ways tougher than my first. I didn't have the "prove to myself I can do this factor" anymore. I already knew I could. What was I proving?
Another half 5 months after your first ...could burn you out. I know it would have done that to me. And I heart jogging. Waiting basically a year to do your second will probably make you antsy. I'd say maybe find a race that is in the middle of those two in terms of timing. Or do Vegas, but find something shorter than a half to train for between now and then.
Just my two cents. I took the approach of what would make you most want to keep with the long distance races after race #2.
