Why Do I Run?

I got an interesting comment on my last post - asking what drives/motivates me to run and if i really enjoy it? I thought it was an excellent topic for a blog post. (Thanks, Nyna!)

So, why do i run? Honestly, it's because i thought i couldn't. I didn't do track or cross country or sports growing up. Really the only physical activity i did was dance, and you don't have to run for that! I remember a couple times trying to go for a "run" in college, but giving up after a few minutes. I just figured i wasn't designed to run.

Then a couple years ago, i found the Couch to 5k program. I thought "What the hell" and decided to give it a shot. I love this program because it eases you into running. I felt so proud each time i advanced to the next week and found that i could run for longer and longer. I did my first 5k race in December with my good friend Gerry & found i was hooked.

So what motivates me to keep running? Well, running doesn't really come naturally to me. I have to practice, practice, practice. As you've seen my some of my blog entries, some runs are still a struggle for me and i get frustrated. But i keep trying because i know how great it feels once i get done with a good run. (They should really bottle & sell that feeling!)

i do enjoy running, contrary to what i say/write sometimes. ;) I think it can best be summed up with what is on the back of my shirt i am wearing to my half marathon next weekend:
I love running
I hate running
I love running
I hate running

How about you guys? What keeps you motivated to run? How did you start?

Also, i want to mention BIC (Because I Can) Bands that i won in Katye's raffle! Here are the bands i chose:

These headbands are super cute - and they honestly stay in place!! I have some Bondi Bands too, but usually have to secure them with bobby pins during a run. I don't have that problem with the BIC Bands - those suckers stay where they are supposed to!

If you're in the market, i definitely recommend them! (Hard to see, but i was sporting my blue one in my hiking pictures.)You can check out Sandy's Etsy page here.

I run for the same reasons. I too tried to run in college and would quit after a few minutes. I could never do it. I remember in 9th grade being the only girl who couldn't run the mile in 12 minutes. Running was so hard for me, and still is. But it's so fun to acheive something you never thought you could do. I love the "I love Running, I hate running." I so agree with you. :)

Love the headbands!!! AWESOME POST!!! I know exactly what you mean about the love/hate relationship! I run because of the endorphins and the feelings of accomplishment. I love being able to be completely selfish and spend time working on myself!

I'm totally with you on the "I love running, I hate running" thing. It's a love/hate relationship but in the end its usually love.
I run because I feel better about myself after a run. And because it's me time, even if I'm running with a group. I can think about anything I want or I can totally block everything out and not think at all.

There's nothing about running that I hate. When I say I love it, I say it without qualification. I am new to running - I was a gym rat for 20 years - but sucked wind just trying to run to the corner stop sign. So, I didn't run - because I thought I couldn't. Then I decided that the very things that you "can't" do are probably the very things that you should be working on. After all, it's easy to do what you're accomplished at doing. So, I joined a running club and learned that I really could run. I'm a slow runner (10:00/mi), but I'm training to get faster. I can now do one mile in 9:00, but if I'm racing I can't hold that, yet. I do all of my scheduled training runs. I run in the cold. I run in the heat. I run in the rain. I run in the morning. I run in the evening. I run solo. I run with a group. The only thing that I don't do is run in lightning or in the dark alone. If the schedule says 8 miles, I don't quit after one mile unless I am injured. I push through. Running is often HARD when I push the pace, but running is never a CHORE for me - because I LOVE running!

I run for the exact same feelings! I'm a new runner and one of my new year's resolutions was to sign up for a half marathon which I did- for November. Plenty of time for me to go from 2-3mi to 13.1! But, I feel like I can't be a runner, or that I'm not made to be a runner, so this year is like a test to show that I can too be a "runner." Love your blog!

I think I started running because I liked the sound of me saying, "I'm going out for a run!" Plus, it gave me a great excuse to buy a cool pair of shoes! I keep running because I love how far I can go - it amazed me that I could complete a half marathon! And now, when I don't have a chance to run for a few days, I actually crave it! I'm hooked!

I liked the couch to 5k program because I always thought I couldn't run either. Now I know I can but I still don't love it.
