Let's talk weight-lifting

Oh hey, remember how last year I got the death sickness and was out of commission for like two weeks? And how I said that I never get sick and it was so bizarre? Guess who is recovering from bronchitis....this girl.

Ugh.

I'm starting to think the state of Arizona hates my immune system! It's all out of whack. Needless to say, I have taken a break from working out due to wanting to die every single day. But I think I am finally almost over it and slowly working my way back to the gym.

So, a couple of weeks ago, I bought the book The New Rules of Lifting for Women. I had seen it around a few of the blogs and it sounded like something I wanted to try. Weight lifting is completely brand new to me. Sure I do a machine or two in the gym, but I've never had a routine or quite frankly really never knew what exactly to do.

This book has a TON of information. TON. And after you read it, you are super pumped to get started! However, there is one tiny  big thing that has been eating away at me...

INTIMIDATION.

Oh wait. You mean I actually have to go to the gym and try this exercises....in front of people? With equipment I really have no idea how to use?  Because let's be serious y'all...some of these moves are just designed to make you look awkward.

I'm trying to find the courage to start this program because I think it really will be something new & beneficial. Anyone else out there that has done this? Or tips on how to make me not drop a weight on myself or completely look like a spaz?

I don't have any great advice, because I share your concerns. Maybe, go with a friend who's an experienced lifter & can show you the ropes? I've heard nothing but great things about that book.

i suggest bringing a friend...that person will show ya the ropes and then your confidence will be there and you'll be ready to kick butt in the gym! good luck to ya...

I third the going with someone! I don't know what part of Phoenix you live in, and I am by no means an expert, but I used to do a fair amount of strength training (before I fell in love with running), but I'd be happy to go with you and embarrass myself figuring it out, and then show you after the embarrassment is over ;) I've been wanting to try The New Rules of Weight Lifting for Women! Also, you could do like a single session with a trainer to show you the ropes. It's not bank breaking for one section if you'd really feel more comfortable after getting professional advice.

ummm, right there with ya.

I would drop a weight on my foot, trip into a machine and probably land face first in some muscle heads crotch.

but that's just me.

if you ever find that courage thing, let me know where I can get some!

I feel the same way. When I used to go to my old gym, I knew most the people and was comfortable. But now at my new gym, I'm still a little shy about it. Gotta get it done though :)

Hey girl.

I am so sorry you are sick again. That was me too till I went to the naturapath..Its also another reason I am leaving the teaching profession. I think my immune system needs a break...to stressful and lots of sick kids :) Arent you a teacher too?
I do weights in the gym. Its not hard. I used to go to la fitness but now im at golds and they have a womens area, so I can do whatever and not feel silly. The guys at the gym will totallyhelp you..not the trainers but the guys.
Embrace the spaz! :)

we should meet up for a hike. Let me know if you wnat to join me :)

Bring someone with you to the gym. When I want to try the weights, I go with my boyfriend. He knows how to use all the machines really well. Just make sure you don't hurt yourself. I'm still a little freaked out by the weights and I don't really do it that often because of it. Be careful!

You will be fine. I used to be so scared to try it, but I got over it.
And then, my university gym decided to forgo the female weights room and just have a common weights section. Imagine my horror? But I got over that as well. Just tell yourself, everyone has to start somewhere. PEople are usually more acceptable in the gyms and are encouraging. :)
You will be ok. Get over that initial few awkward feeling times. You will be ok.
